"West Africa Launches Final Assault on Polio, 60 Million Children To Be Vaccinated" Africa News Service (www.allafrica.com) (11/12/02)
Sixteen West African nations have banded together this week to vaccinate millions of children under the age of five against polio. As a result of mass immunization campaigns over the last two years, the number of polio-endemic countries in Africa has dropped to a record low, falling from 20 in 1999 to just three this year. The Global Polio Eradication Initiative is being led by the World Health Organization, Rotary International, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and UNICEF.
