The University of Rochester says small amounts of mercury in some childhood vaccines aren`t a danger.
(Rochester-AP) -- The university studied a preservative in vaccines that
contains mercury. Some suspect the mercury causes neurological problems.
The university says they should be considered safe. The results of the study
will be published tomorrow in Britain's medical journal -- The Lancet.
The university found that children immunized with those vaccines have
blood-mercury levels far below what the government considers dangerous.
The American F-D-A asked manufacturers to stop using the preservative in
vaccines, so U-S children no longer get vaccines with that compound.
But children in the rest of the world still get those vaccines. One researcher
says the study should ease the minds of people elsewhere and those who got the
vaccines before 1999.
One group that wants to recall all mercury-containing vaccines says the
university's conclusions are too broad.
University researchers say they're working on a more comprehensive study.
