"Uganda: Tetanus Vaccination a Success in Busoga"
Africa News Service (www.allafrica.com) (11/04/02)
Between Sept. 25 and Sept. 29, 560 women in the Busoga region of Uganda were vaccinated against tetanus, which caused as many as 400 deaths in the area last year. The Busoga region has the highest incidence of tetanus in the country. According to the Uganda National Expanded Program on Immunization, health officials reached 87 percent of the target group. At the launch of a national campaign against tetanus, Uganda's health minister, Jim Muhwezi, said: "We shall go around the country to mobilize everyone for a total war against maternal and neonatal tetanus," and he called on pregnant women to visit antenatal clinics at least four times to help reduce the high maternal mortality rate in the country.
