"Tucson to Stage Large-Scale Bioterror Response
Drill" Associated Press (www.ap.org)
(11/18/02); Rotstein, Arthur H.
Local, state and federal agencies will
participate in a large-scale bioterror response drill in Tucson, Ariz., this
week that will test how fast law enforcement officials can dispense antibiotics
and vaccines from the National Pharmaceutical Stockpile in case of a
bioterrorism attack. In addition to measuring the response time, the exercise
will try to determine how many people health officials can treat in a crisis and
what if any changes in the training of doctors and emergency technicians need to
be made. Hundreds of observers will watch the three-day training exercise,
including Surgeon General Richard Carmona and officials from the Justice
Department, who will critique the performance of emergency crews. Following the
mock attack on Wednesday, emergency workers will take part in an exercise that
will require them to administer tetanus shots to over 5,000 high school students
in Mesa.
