"Thailand Urges Collaboration on Supply of Vaccines"
Xinhua News Agency (202.84.17.11/en/main.htm) (11/21/02)
Thailand would like to see Southeast Asian nations cooperate to produce and supply vaccines for tropical diseases. The advantages of the arrangement would be lower prices than those charged by Western drug companies and the development of cures for diseases for which the multinational companies do not have the economic incentive to create, according to the Thai Public Health Ministry's Supamit Chunsittiwat. A Japanese encephalitis vaccine could be a major contribution from Thailand in such a collaboration. The idea has spurred the interest of Indonesia, which produces the most vaccines in the region.
