A new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates that between May 2001 and October 2002, six people in the United States experienced serious side effects that were probably from yellow fever vaccination.  According to the report, published in the Nov. 8 issue of Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, four of the patients developed yellow fever vaccine-associated neurotropic disease (YEL-AND), which was formerly known as postvaccinal encephalitis, while the other two patients were diagnosed with yellow fever vaccine-associated viscerotropic disease (YEL-AVD), which used to be called multiple organ system failure.  The CDC's Dr. Martin Cetron noted that these cases are rare, and he stressed the importance of the yellow fever vaccine for people traveling to areas of the world where the disease is prevalent.
