LEAD PARAGRAPH - Starting today, the public will have a scorecard that names hospitals in New York State where relatively high numbers of patients die during treatment for life-threatening conditions.

The listing, compiled by an organization that promotes health care quality, provides information on more than 200 hospitals. The sponsors said the report, which will be posted on the Web today and updated annually, should ultimately lead to better care for patients as the hospitals strive to improve their ratings.
