"Rwanda: City-Wide Meningitis Vaccination Campaign Under Way" Africa News Service (www.allafrica.com) (10/31/02)
With the World Health Organization (WHO) reporting 636 cases of meningitis in eight of 12 provinces in Rwanda as of Sept. 2, Rwandan Health Minister Marie Mugabo launched a vaccination campaign against the disease in the capital city of Kigali. Mugabo noted that students and teachers would be vaccinated first, and then the rest of the city would receive the vaccine. Asking for donation of 2 million doses of the vaccine for populations at risk, the WHO, the Ministry of Health, Medecins Sans Frontieres, and the UNICEF hope to guard against future outbreaks.
