A polio vaccination drive in the eastern Democratic
Republic of the Congo has yielded "generally satisfactory" results, the UN
Mission in the DRC (known as MONUC) reported in its latest bulletin, published
on Saturday.
MONUC, quoting the World Health Organisation (WHO), said
9.1 million children were vaccinated in two phases, but that the third phase had
yielded less successful results. At least 100,000 children could not be
vaccinated during the three segments of the programme. "Vaccination teams had a
lot of difficulty moving around because of renewed hostilities," MONUC said,
quoting the WHO.
It said no child had been vaccinated in the health zones
of Gombari, Haut Ulele, and Isiro. Gombari, in Orientale Province, South Kivu
and Maniema were the most affected by insecurity.
