Xinhua News Agency (202.84.17.11/en/main.htm) (11/14/02)

Researchers in China have developed a new chickenpox vaccine.  The Changchun Institute of Biological Products, which created the Freeze-dried Live Attenuated Varicella Vaccine, reports that in a clinical trial, 98.89 percent of the children studied, ranging in age from one to six years old, had immunity to chickenpox within six weeks of vaccination.  The institute plans to produce enough of the new vaccine to immunize 5 million people per year against the disease.  The product has already received approval from the Good Manufacturing Practice and the public health authority of China.
