The first international forum on autism begins today in Melbourne.
The three-day conference will hear from people who have autism, their carers and
researchers from around the world.
Dr Laurence Bartact, from Monash University, says about one in 700 Australian
children suffer from autism.
"Parents and some relatives will be giving papers about what it's like and
they'll be talking about programs or initiatives that they've developed
themselves," he said.
"There will be also chat rooms and retreat rooms, where they can meet other
people in a fairly peaceful environment."
