U.S. IMMUNIZATION NEWS
"Many Workers Avoiding Flu Shots"
New York Times (www.nytimes.com) (11/10/02) P. 8; Marino, Vivian
Only 33 percent of 1,017 people who were surveyed by flu vaccine distributor Henry Schein last month said they had been or plan to get the flu shot. Reasons cited for not receiving the vaccine include fear of needles, busy schedules, lack of insurance coverage, and distance from doctor's office. The survey results show that most people underestimate the death toll of influenza, which can take the lives of up to 20,000 people in the United States per year, according to the August 2002 issue of Clinical Infectious Diseases.
