"Kenya: Government Warns of Outbreaks of Malaria, Typhoid" Africa News Service (www.allafrica.com) (11/09/02)
As a result of El Nino weather conditions in the country, Julius Meme--Kenya's permanent secretary in the Ministry of Health--warned recently of possible outbreaks of malaria, typhoid, cholera, and dysentery. Meme pointed to Kisii, Rift Valley, Coast, and the North Eastern provinces areas of Wajir and Ijara as the most at-risk areas of the country. The official noted that "disease outbreaks are expected in the country with the onset of the rains, and the public must be aware and prepare for the worst." He said that while the government is prepared to contain any outbreaks, the public must also help out. Meme also announced a mass yellow fever vaccination campaign, to be conducted in the Rift Valley from Nov. 9 to Nov. 30. The effort will involve the vaccination of everyone in the region between the ages of nine months and 99 years of age.
