Flu vaccinations are under way today in
Baxter County but they're not just any flu shots. State health
officials are hoping to learn how prepared they are to handle a
widespread vaccination program, should something such as a
smallpox outbreak occur.
Health workers in Mountain Home are giving mass flu shots at
the county fairgrounds to simulate a smallpox vaccination program.
Ten thousand doses of flu vaccine are available today, and shots
are given for free until 8:00 PM.
Officials are hoping for a big turnout, which would help test
the system's capacity.
By 8:30 this morning, the county health department says more
than 500 people had already been vaccinated.
In Baxter County, 28 percent of residents are 65 and older the
age group most susceptible to the flu.
