Avant Immunotherapeutics Inc. and its
partner, DynPort Vaccine Co. LLC (DVC) of Reston, Va., have entered into a
Phase I clinical trial of an injectable anthrax vaccine.
The Needham-based company and DynPort will administer the vaccine, which
consists of a protective antigen derived from anthrax bacterium, to nearly
70 volunteers.
DVC is a joint venture between DynCorp. and Porton International Inc. in
Washington, D.C.
The trial will be held at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research in
Maryland in collaboration with the Henry M. Jackson Foundation and will
study the safety of DynPorts vaccine being developed for the Department of
Defense.
In pre-clinical animal trials, the vaccine was found to be safe and
well-tolerated.
We are very pleased to have reached the important milestone of taking this
injectable anthrax vaccine candidate into the clinic, said Una S. Ryan,
president and chief executive at Avant, in a release.
