"Acambis to Seek OK for Human Trials of West Nile Vaccine"
Dow Jones Newswire (www.djnewswires.com) (11/14/02)
The chief scientist at Acambis, Thomas Monath, announced this week that the Cambridge, Mass.-based company intends to launch human trials of a West Nile virus vaccine in March 2003. Monath told a meeting of the American Society for Tropical Medicine & Hygiene that the company plans to seek Food and Drug Administration approval for human tests of the vaccine, and a possible product could reach the market within five years. The phase I human tests, to involve 30 to 75 people, will focus on the vaccine's safety. According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, West Nile virus has sickened nearly 3,600 people and taken the lives of 211 in the United States this year.
