"AIDS Pioneers Unveil Joint Vaccine Scheme"
Agence France Presse (www.afp.com/english/home) (11/15/02)
The two scientists jointly credited for their groundbreaking identification of HIV in the 1980s, Drs. Luc Montagnier and Robert Gallo, announced Friday a joint effort in the development of an HIV vaccine that could begin clinical trials within the next 18 months. So far, only one experimental AIDS vaccine, AIDSvax, has successfully reached the Phase III trial level, though another, made by Aventis Pasteur from a combination of AIDSvax and ALVAC-HIV, is being launched in Thailand later this year. Montagnier and Gallo also announced that they are trying to develop a vaccine to reduce the risk of mother-to-child HIV transmission via breast milk.
