"13 Die of Cholera in S. Philippines"
Kyodo News (home.kyodo.co.jp) (10/30/02)
A cholera outbreak on Tapiantana island in a remote region of the Basilan Province of the southern Philippines has taken the lives of at least 13 people of 20 people infected thus far, including six children, according to the government. Basilan Gov. Wahab Akbar appealed this week for more medicines and food to help the island of about 3,000, mostly coconut farmers and fisherman. Tapiantana Island is like many in the region, says government spokesman Cris Puno--still so underdeveloped that it lacks a potable water system, electricity, health clinics, schools and other basic necessities.
