Stool Catcher

"Have you had their stools analysed?" asked another mother during
one of the many note-comparing conversations in which the parents of autistic
children indulge with a kind of gloomy pride.
No, I hadn't, and I didn't fancy it much. I'd had their urine
analysed, removed gluten and casein from Sam's diet, treated them for
thrush, injected Sam with secretin, put them through auditory integration
training, but so far I'd avoided this one. I knew what would happen. First, I'd reject stool sampling as not practicable, then I'd push the idea to
the back of my mind, then I'd allow myself to listen to the arguments, and
finally I would - as it were - bite the bullet.
With a heavy heart I took the number of the dietician who reads
entrails - or rather, the contents of entrails - and, yes, eventually I
rang her. She was reassuring: intelligent, concerned. Stools analysis, she
explained, can reveal the presence of harmful parasites. It's not an
allergy test, but it shows up deficiencies or intolerances. "Just collect three
samples and pop them into containers."
That shouldn't be difficult, I thought, since there hasn't been an
inch of floor space uncrapped on in my house in the past 11 years. I sent
off a hefty cheque, and received a box full of pots and scoops. The
samples, said the accompanying literature, should be collected on three consecutive
days. George only goes about twice a week. I would have to ignore this
instruction.
"The sample must be uncontaminated by urine." How could this be
achieved? Autistic children won't oblige with the little vessels provided.
In the matter of defecation, George and Sam have always been free spirits.
The days of Turner-Prize-winning displays on walls and windows are (touch
wood) over, but performing to order is not within their repertoire.
Months of teaching Sam not to poo in the bath had to be undone.
Bathwater, I reckoned, must be less contaminating than urine, so Sam's
bath was cleared of boats, penguins, clockwork frogs and the like, and I
hovered in my plastic gloves, scoop poised. I had to act fast to prevent the
precious morsels from disintegrating.George, a child of nature, prefers to do it in the garden. I had
discouraged this, but now I was shooing him out in all weathers. At last,
a
substantial prize lay steaming on the grass. Out I hurried. George was
nowhere in sight. As I shovelled, it crossed my mind that this might not
be his own production, but that of a fox or badger. I looked forward to the
laboratory report: "We recommend that you no longer feed your son on
slugs, earthworms and old crisp packets."Three plastic tubes per day, each to be labelled with the date and
hour of collection. You mix the stuff with special liquid until it looks
like pea soup, then you stopper it and mail it to the appealingly named
Great Smokies Diagnostic Laboratory. I was called by a lab worker. "Could
you give me the date of collection?" "I filled out the labels," I tersely
replied. "Unfortunately, there has been leakage in transit. The labelling
is obscured." My heart went out to the poor woman. When she was at primary
school and the other girls wanted to be air hostesses or ballerinas, did
she say, "When I grow up I'd like to open leaky parcels of other people's
shit?"Great Smokies sent long and fascinating reports. Both boys were
rampant with bad bacteria - pseudomonas, citrobacter freundii, giardia
lamblia cysts. Their gut flora resembled my flowerbeds after next door's
sheep have broken in. The dietician recommended supplements and antidotes;
six different potions, totalling 19 daily doses. All that remained was for
me to insert these potions into the boys.I mixed them into their drinks. They spat, and threw their beakers
away. I stirred them into icing sugar. They abandoned it after a couple of
licks. "Mix them with ketchup," suggested the dietician. "That disguises
most tastes."
Tastes, maybe, but not colours. The ketchup turned pale orange. The boys
smelt a rat - or something worse. These supplements are disgusting. After
a few more tries - spoonfuls of honey, freezing it into ice lollies, baking
it into gingerbread like marijuana - I gave up. I have a vivid apprehension
of the menagerie of undesirables rampaging through my sons' bowels, and a box
of expensive supplements sitting in silent reproach. Oh, and my bank
balance developed a leaky gut. Any cures for that?Guardian Unlimited © Guardian

Parent Speaks Out at Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee Meeting

On Monday, November 19, 2001 I attended the Interagency Autism
Coordinating Committee Meeting in Bethesda, Maryland with Albert
Enayati, Edward Wong, Ron Oberleitner and Agnes Cushing. We all had a
chance to speak as did Sallie Bernard and Barbara Loe Fisher. Albert
Enayati, Barbara Fisher, other parents, and myself called for more
science in the issue of vaccine reactions triggering autism.

After Kathryn Carbone, MD of the Food & Drug Administration (FDA, Center
for Biological Evaluation and Research) spoke, I asked her what she
thought of a before and after vaccine study on lymphocyte subpopulation
regarding the MMR, DPT, Hib, hepatitis B and polio (intravenous and
oral) vaccines. She said it would be a very good study....very
creditable.

At the Table, various NIH agencies were represented (NICHD, NIMH, NIDCD,
NIEHS and NINDS), CDC, FDA, ATSDR and Department of Education as well as
Public members Barry Gordon, MD of John Hopkins University, Lee
Grossman, President, Autism Society of America, Jon Shestack, Vice
President, Cure Autism Now, and Lucille Zeph. Ed.D., Director, Center
for Excellence in Developmental Disability Education, Research, and
Service, Center for Community Inclusion, University of Maine.

I said the following......

"My name is Raymond Gallup and I'm here today as a parent of Eric
Gallup, age 16, who was normal at birth and developed autism after the
MMR vaccine shot in April 1986. I'm a Vietnam-era US Navy veteran. Also,
I'm President of the Autism Autoimmunity Project, an autism research
non-profit organization approved by the IRS in 1998. I started this
organization in 1998 because I had met with the NIH in 1997 to get
funding for immunology research into autism. To date there has been no
immunology or gastroenterology research funded by the NIH.

There is an epidemic of autism across the US. In Eric's school there
were 20 students in 1992, now there are over 100. In the UK, David
Thrower, a parent reported 1 in 69 in the Wakefield school district in
England.

In a letter to the Lancet on July 8,2000, in the Correspondence section
titled The MMR Question, I mentioned the conversation I had with Dr.
Jacqueline Bertrand of the CDC regarding their study of autism in Brick,
NJ. I asked Dr. Bertrand if any of the children were not vaccinated in
Brick, NJ. She said No, it was a highly vaccinated population. Then I
asked her if the CDC planned on doing any immune blood panel tests.
Again she said No. Yet, the CDC announced to the news media that there
was no connection to autism and the MMR vaccine or any other vaccine. We
need the science.

The HHS states that the DPT vaccine can cause encephalitis and seizures.
also, they state that the MMR vaccine can cause encephalitis. In the
Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting system (VAERS) there is one case in
California, where a doctor reported a case of autism regarding the
MMR/DPT and Oral Polio vaccines. He also stated that there were 10 other
such cases. I know there are privacy rules but this should be
investigated.

There are lots of toxins in the vaccines including aluminum, mercury and
formaldehyde as well as aborted human fetal tissue and animal tissue
including chick embryo, monkey and pig. There is no way of knowing what
effect animal viruses has on the human DNA after it gets in the blood
stream of humans. The viruses and bacteria are cultured in this animal
tissue without any thought about the consequences they can cause to the
human immune/neurological system.

I have been in touch with over 400 families in the U.S. that link the
MMR vaccine to their child's autism. Many other families contacted me
about the DPT and hepatitis B vaccines as well as a combination of
vaccines where the child may get three in one day. I have with me today
a copy of an epidemiology study by Dr. Walter Spitzer that should be
funded and supported by the HHS, which I will give you. It is titled
Intercontinental Research Group on the Epidemiology of Autism.

Immuno-therapy treatments such as the intravenous gamma globulin have
helped our son and others. We need more immunology and gastroenterology
research for autism. Here is a picture of our son, Eric and our
daughter, Julie. I have asked Eric if he wants to get better and he
shakes his head, Yes. Julie says she would like to see Eric speak and
get better. We got to do the science."

The room was very quiet when the parents spoke and the government health
officials seemed sympathetic, but, unfortunately, the hand outs included
nothing about immunology or gastroenterology research. The hand outs
just mentioned genetics, brain banks and psychosocial and
pharmacological treatments.

US Researcher Links MMR to Autism

  A highly respected and well-published scientist at the Utah State
University, Vijendra K. Singh has further linked autism to the MMR vaccine.
His study published in New Foundation of Biology, Elsevier Science BV 2001:
447-58 titled Neuro-immunopathogenesis in Autism provides brain autoantibody
and virus serology evidence that links autism to MMR and postulates autism
as a neuroautoimmune response that occurs at the neuroimmune biological
interface.
      Singh found that autoantibodies to myelin basic proteins were present
in 80% of autistic children but that none were found in the normal children
control group and only rarely in all other controls. These autoantibodies
attack the basic proteins that constitute myelin, which surrounds the
sheaths of nerve fibers. Regarding the virus serology, autistic children had
a significantly higher level of measles virus antibodies as compared to
controls, which suggests a temporal link of measles virus with autoimmunity
in autism.
      Furthermore, Singh found a very important serological association
between measles antibody level and antiMBP, which showed that the higher the
measles antibody titer the greater the chance of autoantibodies to myelin
basic protein. The shocking fact is that none of the children had a
wild-type measles infection, but they all had the measles mumps rubella
(MMR) vaccine.
      Singh also offers hope. He notes an open label trial of oral
Sphingolin (myelin containing autoantigen) is being assessed. Preliminary
results show significant improvement in autistic people, which further
support the neuroimmune pathogenesis in autism. -transcribed by Susan E.
