Dear New Jersey Parents:

I am asking you to make a few phone calls today to help the Autism legislation to provide $5.7 million over the next five years for autism research in the State of New Jersey, which is in great danger of being lost.

During the past year New Jersey Cure Autism Now and a number of other groups
have been working to pass legislation embodied in New Jersey State Senate
Bill  S1133 which is titled "The Governor's Council for Medical Research and
Treatment of Infantile Autism shall be funded annually at $1.5 million."

This legislation has passed four committees and now is in the office of the
Senate President and Majority Leader, John O. Bennett. He has been
called many times but still refuses to post this legislation for a vote in
the Senate on November 26, that will continue the $1.5 million funding over a period of five years.

Please call Senator Bennett at 732-842-4900 to ask him to post the Legislation # S 1133 Infantile Autism research on Monday November 26.

SUGGESTED TELEPHONE SCRIPT

Please ask to speak to Karen (his legislative aide): Say to her something like: "I have an autistic child who is __ years old and it is a major problem for me and my family. Please ask Senator Bennett to allow a vote on Senate Bill S1133 to give annual funding of $1.5 million for medical research on autism over the next five years."
If she gives you a lot of argument about it costs too much, simply say something like "There are about 15 thousand autistic people in New Jersey and about 5,000 of them cannot even speak... This affects more than 100,000 close relatives ... parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters... and costs the state about $500 million each year in social services I strongly think that .. the State of New Jersey should provide serious funding to help conquer this terrible disability."

If Karen is not available leave a message and call again to speak to her personally. Tell her that you want Senator Bennett to post the autism Legislation S 1133 for a vote in the Senate on November 26 2001.

P.S. Senator Bennett's email address is: SenBennett@njleg.state.nj.us and his fax number is 732-842-5326..

Dr. Eric Fombonne says, "prevalence of autism is 68 per 10,000 or 1-147. "

At the recent IMFAR (International Meeting For Autism Research) Conference, noted autism epidemiologist Dr. Eric Fombonne stated in his presentation that based on 50 previously published epi studies of autism, the prevalence rate of autism had been established, by his work and others, at between 2 to 10 per 10,000...which is to say as low as 1-5000 or as high as 1-1000 (Fombonne's own past studies reported the lower end of the prevalence spectrum). In a monumental statement at IMFAR, Fombonne now claims, as a result of his most recent work, that the prevalence of autism is 68 per 10,000 or 1-147.

Fombonne's latest work shows that the prevalence of autism has increased between 600% and 3400% (1-1000 down to 1-147 = 600% increase) and (1-5000 down to 1-147 = 3400% increase). Using the middle ground of 5 per 10,000 or otherwise stated as 1-2000, the most recent epi study by this most conservative autism epidemiologist would now suggest a 1300% increase in the prevalence of autism over a 25 year period, or on average, a doubling of the prevalence of autism every two years between 1976 and 2001
