MMR doctor cleared to give single jabs
A
doctor who sparked controversy by vaccinating children against measles, mumps
and rubella with separate injections can carry on giving the jabs.

The General Medical Council disciplinary body is not proceeding to a full
conduct committee against Dr Peter Mansfield but has instead
"concluded" his case with a letter of advice.Dr Mansfield immediately
said he would continue providing single jabs, rather than the triple MMR
inoculations advocated by the Government's Chief Medical Officer - which some
research has linked to an increase in autism and bowel disorder. The GMC's
Preliminary Proceedings Committee said that, having reviewed the case, it felt
Dr Mansfield should continue to give advice to patients about the full range of
options for inoculations available in the light of the latest scientific
evidence and the continuing debate.Dr Mansfield had been facing allegations of
acting contrary to normal medical practice and against the best interests of
patients by giving the jabs. But after hearing the GMC decision, he spoke of his
"gratification" and insisted he would carry on with the single
jabs.Dr Mansfield's case was drawn to the attention of the GMC after
Worcestershire Health Authority received complaints he had given the jabs to
hundreds of children at private clinics in Worcester and Louth, Lincolnshire. He
said: "I am free to give single vaccines and I never paused in my step. I
am not surprised at all and very pleased."I am also somewhat gratified the
advice is not arduous or arbitrary. It was a rather sympathetic letter and I am
already doing all the things they are asking me."

official told educators at a recent meeting here. Grover J.
"Russ" Whitehurst, the assistant secretary for educational research
and improvement and a participant in a panel discussion at the annual
conference of the National Association for the Education of Young Children,
said "evaluation is too often treated as a hoop you have to jump
through." Educators, particularly those in the early-childhood field, have
historically paid little attention to gathering evidence, Mr. Whitehurst
contended. His blunt comments—made at the first-of-its-kind NAEYC panel
discussion involving top offi
