"Vaccine Tries to Trick Body Into Attacking Cancer Cells" Ottawa Citizen (www.canada.com/ottawa/ottawacitizen) (05/24/02) P. A16; Munro, Margaret
A study involving 479 Canadian patients with follicular lymphoma will determine if a personalized vaccine can trick their bodies into attacking cancer cells; follicular lymphoma, which is currently incurable, kills most victims within 10 years of diagnosis. The vaccine is created from the patient's own cancerous cells and will be used to attack remaining cancer cells following chemotherapy treatment, explains British Columbia Cancer Agency researcher Joseph Connors. Each of the patients involving in the study, which is funded by California-based Genitope Corporation, will receive seven monthly vaccinations of their personalized vaccine. Tests conducted by the National Institutes of Health and Stanford University researchers determined that custom-made vaccines are promising in the fight against cancer.
