"U.S. Scientists Develop New Lyme Vaccine"

Xinhua News Agency (202.84.17.11/en/main.htm) (05/29/02)

Following the removal of GlaxoSmithKline's (GSK) LYMErix vaccine earlier this year, researchers at the State University of New York (SUNY) report that they have produced a new version of the old vaccine.  GSK withdrew the vaccine because of poor sales; however, some people claim the vaccine caused arthritis and other side effects.  The new vaccine does not include Outer surface protein A (OspA), which some people believe is the culprit behind those side effects.  The SUNY researchers say they created a chimeric version of OspA in which the suspect part of OspA was replaced by an equivalent from a European Borrelia strain that does not cause arthritis.
