Vaccine" Associated Press (www.ap.org)

A study to evaluate the safety and effectiveness
of a new smallpox vaccine developed by DynPort Vaccine Company (DVC), a firm
tasked with developing, licensing and supplying biodefense vaccines for the
military, will be held at the University
of Kentucky's Chandler Medical Center. Dr. James Holsinger, chancellor of the
medical center, emphasized the importance of the public understanding just how
globally devastating smallpox could potentially be. The researchers--who said
they hope to have the vaccine licensed by 2005--plan to recruit up to 150
volunteers for the trial, with 100 receiving the new vaccine and the remainder
receiving the existing smallpox vaccine.
