THE TOP doctor who gave the green light to the MMR jab yesterday called for parents to be given a choice on the controversial vaccine.

Dr Eileen Rubery — who headed the Department of Health committee which backed the triple jab — said worried parents SHOULD be able to give their children single vaccines.

Dr Rubery said the Government must rethink their policies — because of the dwindling uptake in the MMR jab.

Echoing The Sun’s plea to give all parents a choice, she said: "The present policy from the Department of Health is not working.

“I think people want to have the choice, they don’t like to be dictated to. Parents would not feel pressurised.”

Dr Rubery spoke out just months after defiant PM Tony Blair blasted the “scaremongers” who wanted mums to have a choice over measles jabs.

An estimated 1.2million babies have the MMR jab every year.

The combined injection costs £60 compared to £200 for individual shots.

But following a small measles outbreak in the North East in February, The Sun called for single vaccines to be made available to parents.

And the respected National Autistic Society backed The Sun as a poll showed 85 per cent of parents want single jabs.
