"Severe Flu Outbreak Feared"

Melbourne Age (www.theage.com.au) (05/29/02) P. 1; Guerrera, Orietta

The worst flu season in years may hit Victoria, Australia, experts say, as early outbreaks of the virus have been seen across Melbourne, affecting at least one in five students at a secondary college and students at an eastern suburban primary school.  The Victorian Infectious Diseases Reference Laboratory reports that the flu outbreak first showed up in two nursing homes during the country's summer.  A normal flu season for the Melbourne region is autumn to early spring, with peaks between July and September and in a normal season, an average of 1.5 percent of patients seeking medical attention show flu symptoms. At present, according to Dr. Heath Kelly of the Victorian Infectious Diseases Reference Laboratory, the peak of the current outbreak occurred when 21 percent of the students at the college and primary school were absent because of influenza or related health problems.  Nick Demediuk, treasurer of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, said that because the past few years have been mild in regard to influenza outbreaks, they were due for a critical one.  Experts recommend that adults over the age of 65 should take advantage of the free flu vaccinations being offered, and they note that some businesses are offering free vaccinations to their employees as well.
