"Results Mixed in CDC Survey of Americans'
Healthful Habits" Dow Jones Newswire Online (www.djnewswires.com)
(05/28/02)
According to new research conducted by the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, most states showed improvement in
adult vaccinations, seat belt use, and mammography during the 1990s, but many
states also saw increases in smoking, obesity, and binge drinking. "It's a mix
of good and bad news," said Dr. David Nelson, who helped conduct the study. The
research, based on telephone surveys of adults completed between 1991 and 2000,
is published in the current Journal of the American Medical Association. An
editorial accompanying the report, by Dr. J. Michael McGinnis of the Robert Wood
Johnson Foundation, said the study's findings highlight the need for stronger
public health measures.

"I know of no safe depository of the ultimate powers of the society but the people themselves, and if we think them not enlightened enough to exercise control with a wholesome discretion, the remedy is not to take it from them, but to inform their discretion by education."
