"Poll: Drug Use a Major Health Concern About Detroit-Area Youth" Associated Press (www.ap.org) (04/28/02)

A new poll--commissioned by the Detroit-based Skillman Foundation so that policy makers, community leaders, and neighbors can work together to improve the lives of children--reveals that the top youth health concerns are teenage drug use, immunizations, child abuse, and prenatal care.  The poll, which was conducted by the Center for Survey Research at the University of Connecticut, surveyed 1,618 people in southeastern Michigan who were over the age of 17, asking them to rate child health issues with 10 being very important and one being not so important.  Teenage drug abuse received an average rating of 8.75, followed by an average rating of 8.26 for immunizations, 8.25 for child abuse, and 8.19 for prenatal care.
