"Miriam to Coordinate Tests of HIV Gel"
Providence Journal (www.projo.com) (05/21/02) P. B3; Levitz, Jennifer
A phase I human clinical trial of Tenofovir, an experimental gel containing the same antiretroviral agents as in anti-HIV drug cocktails that could prevent the transmission of HIV to women, received approval from the National Institutes of Health and will begin in Philadelphia, New York City, and Providence, R.I. Researchers believe the gel, when applied vaginally, will give women an alternative to condoms for HIV protection, says Miriam Hospital doctor and coordinator of the study Kenneth Mayer. He believes women will be able to use the gel without their partner's knowledge to prevent HIV, whereas condom usage becomes a battle for some women. Mayer believes the gel is the perfect product to prevent HIV until more research is conducted to find an HIV vaccine; in related news, the National Institutes of Health gave Brown University researcher Anne De Groot a $2.7 million grant to continue her work to find an HIV vaccine.
