Africa News Service (www.allafrica.com) (05/30/02)
A $15 million measles immunization campaign for children between the ages of nine months and 14 years will soon be underway in Kenya, according to Health Permanent Secretary Julius Meme. The effort, to be held from June 17 to June 23, marks the largest campaign of its kind in Africa and is expected to benefit over 14 million children. The campaign is being sponsored by the World Health Organization, UNICEF, the Kenya Red Cross Society and the American Red Cross, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Global Alliance for Vaccine Initiative, and the Japanese government. As part of the program, children between the ages of six months and five years will receive vitamin A and children five years of age and lower will receive polio vaccines. In addition, women between the ages of 15 and 49 in certain high-risk areas will be vaccinated against tetanus.
