"Haiti Begins Polio Vaccinations"
Associated Press (www.ap.org) (05/20/02); Norton, Michael
In Haiti, a nine-week, $700,000 vaccination campaign against polio was launched recently. In the 12-month period between July 2000 and July of last year, eight children in Haiti and 13 children in the neighboring Dominican Republic contracted polio. In Haiti, two of the children died from the disease. According to researchers, the outbreak of polio in Haiti and Dominican Republic was caused when children who had received the oral polio vaccine came into contact with children who had not yet been immunized.
