Despite some conflicting reports, the Vajpayee
government in New Delhi confirmed that a measles epidemic is sweeping through at
least one relief camp in Godhra, infecting 40 children so far. Union Health
Minister C.P. Thakur said additional funding has been ensured to help implement
additional and continued health measures in the camp. While vaccinations were
administered previously, Thakur believes the outbreak is the result of
unvaccinated children entering the relief camps after the shots were given. "We
have now asked the state to hold vaccination camps every day to cover any new
admissions," he said. He has also urged the government to renew efforts to
ensure safe drinking water and sanitary conditions to limit the spread of
water-borne disease and respiratory tract ailments.
