SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT

Barbara Burton

Insurance Agent, Congressman's Wife

Services for Barbara J. Logan Burton, 65,

Indianapolis, an insurance agent and the wife of U.S.

Rep. Dan Burton, will be at 7:30 p.m. May 14 at East

91st Street Christian Church, of which she was a member.

Calling there will be from 5 p.m.

Burial is private.

She died May 10.

Mrs. Burton worked for the Dan Burton Insurance

Agency for 30 years, often managing the business while

her husband was serving in the Indiana legislature. She

was a volunteer for the American Heart Association,

Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and the

Indianapolis Humane Society.

She attended Campbell Business School in Cincinnati

and later worked as a secretary for State Mutual

Insurance Co. and a Cincinnati brokerage firm.

A native of Corbin, Ky., she stayed in Indianapolis

with the couple's three children when her husband was

elected to the U.S. House. She rarely campaigned with her

husband, preferring to remain a private person instead of

an activist spouse.

The congressman called his wife "the biggest, most

wonderful supporter in my life."

"If there's various levels of heaven, she's got to

be right up there at the top," Burton said Saturday. "She

was a wonderful person. She was the best. The very best."

Burton said his wife tried to avoid the public eye,

especially when her husband fell under media scrutiny.

"She deserved a lot better husband than she had,"

Burton said.

Her friends and family remember Barbara Burton as

a patient mother, a soft-spoken wife and a generous friend.

Friend Phyllis Brown likened her to "the wife of

noble character" described in the Book of Proverbs, which

refers to a woman "clothed with strength and dignity."

"That is my good friend Barbara," Brown said.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Colon

Cancer Alliance, 175 Ninth Ave., New York, NY 10011 or the

Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, P.O. Box 650309,

Dallas, TX 75265-0309.

Besides her husband, she is survived by her

daughters, Kelly Burton Smith and Danielle Lee Burton

Sarkine; son Danny Lee Burton II; cousins Sonja Knott and

Norma Crawford; two grandchildren.

Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service & Crematory,

Greenwood Chapel, is handling arrangements.
