"Ethiopia Receives $2.5 Million for Polio Eradication Programs" BBC Worldwide Monitoring (www.monitor.bbc.co.uk) (05/30/02)
The Japanese government has donated $17 million to help Ethiopia, Ghana, Bangladesh, India, Nigeria, and Sudan eradicate polio and control other childhood infectious diseases, according to the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). A total of $2.59 million will go towards polio eradication and routine vaccination in Ethiopia. UNICEF Carol Bellamy noted that Japan's donation shows its continued support for child health issues, but she asserted that another $275 million in funding is needed to fully eradicate polio from the last 10 countries in which it continues to circulate.
