"Brown Scientist at Work on AIDS Vaccine"
Providence Journal (www.projo.com) (05/14/02) P. B01; Freyer, Felice J.
The director of the Brown University TB/HIV Research Laboratory, Dr. Anne De Groot, has received a $2.7 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), allowing her to continue her research into the development of what she calls a "global" AIDS vaccine. Also founder of the vaccine-design firm EpiVax, De Groot is taking an unconventional approach to finding one that is universally effective. She uses a specially designed computer program to identify certain protein sequences in HIV that trigger immune responses and then isolate the ones that are common to all HIV strains. De Groot named the vaccine GAIA (Global Alliance to Immunize against AIDS) and hopes that with the financial backing of the NIH, her project will be completed within three years.
