"Armenia's Children Mortality Rate Down 25 Per Cent"

BBC Worldwide Monitoring (www.monitor.bbc.co.uk) (05/13/02)

A 25 percent drop in the mortality rate of Armenian children over the past half decade, an immunization rate of 95 percent, and no recorded cases of poliomyelitis since 1995 was reported by Razmik Martirosyan, Minister of Social Security.  These accomplishments he added, were primarily attributable to the active support of the United Nations and its unique agencies and institutions, plus the efforts of non-governmental and international organizations. As he addressed the 27th United Nations General Assembly Special Session on children held in New York last week, Martirosyan commented that despite reaching some goals, not all of the objectives outlined for 2000 were attained; there are still 11,000 children living in only temporary housing, over 65,000 refugee children and the number of neglected children remains critical.
