"Angola: Measles Campaign Launched"
Africa News Service Online (www.allafrica.com) (05/27/02)
The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) announced that over 150,000 Angolan children will be targeted for measles immunization during an emergency campaign being conducted in several provinces, including in Cuango Cubango, Huambo, and Moxico. The region has only recently become accessible under the terms of a ceasefire agreement between Angolan troops and UNITA rebels. Children and families of soldiering fathers have been kept in Quartering Family Areas, and recent assessments have confirmed the need for nutritional aid in the form of vitamin A and other supplements as well as immunization against measles. UNICEF's emergency aid program will be accomplished jointly with support from the ministry of health and several international and national nongovernmental organizations providing vaccines, syringes, cold chain storage, and operational and fuel costs.
