"AIDS Vaccine Trials Likely Next Year"

Economic Times of India (www.economictimes.com) (05/12/02)

Preparations for phase 1 human trials of an AIDS vaccine being developed by the Indian Council of Medical Research and Therion Biologics of the United States are currently underway, with the trials anticipated to begin in New Delhi next year.  The testing will likely raise issues about ethics and intellectual property rights, but N.K. Ganguly, director-general of the Indian Council of Medical Research, said that during the signing of the agreement it had been broadly agreed upon to share patent rights, giving India rights within its neighboring countries as well. Development of the vaccine is being supported by the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative.
