U.S. IMMUNIZATION NEWS

"Third WSU Student Treated for Meningoccocal Disease" Associated Press (www.ap.org) (05/16/02)

A 19-year-old freshman member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity at Washington State University (WSU) became the third student in two months diagnosed with meningococcal disease, which prompted the school to recommend all students receive immunizations against the disease.  All three cases involved freshman students living in a sorority or fraternity, so WSU Health and Wellness Services director Bruce Wright particularly recommended the vaccine for students living in such areas.  Symptoms of the condition include high fever, nausea, vomiting, lethargy, and joint pain and could be accompanied by headaches, stiff neck, and rash.
