"Johns Hopkins Lands Gift of $100 Million"
Washington Post (www.washingtonpost.com) (05/07/01) P. A1;
Argetsinger, Amy

Johns Hopkins University has received a $100 million donation
from an anonymous donor to create an institute dedicated to
finding a new vaccine and treatment for malaria.  Over the next
10 years, researchers already at the Bloomberg School of Public
Health, plus three or four new researchers per year, and a group
of about 150 people that includes graduate students, assistant
researchers, and laboratory technicians will be involved in the
effort.  Malaria infects between 300 million and 500 million
people per year, according to the World Health Organization, and
drug resistance is becoming an increasing concern.  The donation
is one of the biggest gifts to a university designated for a
single indication.
