"House Votes to Phase Out Mercury"
Associated Press (www.ap.org) (05/03/01);
Bujol, Jessica
The Oregon House passed on Thursday a bill that would prohibit
the sale and use of mercury-related products, including
traditional thermometers, vaccines that use mercury as a
preservative ingredient, and novelty items containing the liquid
metal. Mercury is known to be highly toxic and can cause
long-term damage to people and the environment. Even in small
doses, the substance can cause birth defects and neurological
disabilities when not disposed of properly. HB2816 was passed
within two House sessions and now moves on to face a Senate vote.
