WHAT IS A VACCINE ADVERSE REACTION?
It is defined by the Merck manual as the same thing as neurological
complications from a viral disease.

encephalitis are fever, headache, drowsiness, lethargy, coma, tremors,
and a stiff neck and back. CONVULSIONS MAY OCCUR IN PATIENTS OF ANY AGE
BUT ARE MOST COMMON IN INFANTS. Characteristic neurological signs
include uncoordinated and involuntary movements, weakness of the arms,
legs, or other portions of the body, or unusual sensitivity of the skin
to various types of stimuli. The symptoms, signs, and an examination of
the cerebrospinal fluid can usually establish the presence of
encephalitis, but they do not necessarily establish the cause, which
often remains unknown. This situation makes specific treatment
difficult, and even when the causative virus is known, there may be no
drugs effective against it ... The symptoms remaining after recovery
from the acute phase of brain inflammation vary considerably, depending
on the type of encephalitis and on the age and general health of the

Please note that the FDA VAERS (Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System)
data is now available online at the fedbuzz

The data for hepatitis B vaccine adverse reactions only starts in
January 1998, so when it says 5486 total reports, they've left out the
22,000 reports previous to January 1998 (I have all that data in a
spreadsheet).
For hepatitis B vaccine, add the total 22,000 (pre-1998) with the 5486
they have post-1998 and you come up with the current number (through
their end-date) of 27,486 -- there's been about 2500 more reports since
the NVIC press release showing 25,000 VAERS hepatitis B adverse
reactions http://www.909shot.com/prhepb.htm
(as of October 1998).
So be careful about interpreting total numbers in the fedbuzz VAERS
data, otherwise it is a good resource for examining vaccine adverse
reaction reports (although it does not have every field on the VAERS
form). Parents should spend some time going over the adverse reaction
data for each vaccine before giving it to their children.
Keep in mind a vaccine adverse reaction is defined in the medical
literature as a neurological disease (the same exact thing as
complications from a viral or bacterial disease). If you examine the
VAERS data, you will notice repeated cases of neuropathy, convulsions,
etc.
Old comments
Good luck. The CDC and FDA want to hide this from you and make it
incredibly difficult to get good adverse reaction data. The best source
is third parties who have obtained Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting
System (VAERS) from the FDA under the Freedom of Information Act and
have analyzed it. The FDA lets the reports pile up without analyzing or
investigating them. Every so often the FDA or CDC does a journal article
saying VAERS reports are coincidences or acceptable. That's your
government working for you.
