Get informed before immunizations

This week was National Infant Immunization Week, and there's been no effort
to educate parents about vaccine risks or how to recognize vaccine
reactions.

Parents love their children and want to protect them from being hurt by a
vaccine just as much as they want to protect them from diseases. The Food
and Drug Administration's Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System receives
12,000-14,000 reports annually of hospitalizations, injuries and deaths
after immunizations.

Parents should ask their doctor for the manufacturer's package insert for
every vaccine beforehand to better understand how the vaccine was made and
tested, and the contraindications and risks. Parents should also know there
are legal exemptions to vaccination requirements in every state. For more
information, contact the National Vaccine Information Center at
www.909shot.com or (800) 909-SHOT.
