Although some consumer groups are as yet unconvinced, medical experts have concluded that the Prevnar pneumococcal disease vaccine for children is safe in the year it has been on the market and through the 13.2 million doses that have been distributed around the country.  The vaccine demonstrated in clinical trials that it not only dropped the rate of pneumococcal meningitis to nearly zero, but reduced cases of pneumonia and blood infections in children who were administered a four-dose regimen.  Centers for Disease Control and Prevention vaccine surveillance expert Dr. Ben Schwartz stated that the approximate 1,300 reports of adverse effects associated with the vaccine have been mild and within the predicted range of events predicted through clinical testing.
