Western
Zambia Starts Polio Vaccination
Xinhua News
Agency;
[03/06/2002]
Following an outbreak of three cases of polio in western Zambia, health
authorities have implemented a mop-up polio immunization campaign in the
Solwezi District that will focus on vaccinating all children under the
age of five years in a door-to-door sweep of the area. Houses that have
already received the vaccine will be marked with a symbol that alerts
other vaccinators, and children receiving vaccines will have their left
thumb nail painted with ink, according to a report. The current campaign
is expected to end by March 15, with another campaign starting up next
month. The three confirmed cases of polio in western Zambia came from
Angolan refugees.
