"Vaccine Will Virtually
Wipe Out Killer Meningitis Virus" Sunday Mail (Scotland) (03/03/02) P. 22; Paterson, Billy
This week, scientists backed
by the Meningitis Association of Scotland reportedly will unveil a breakthrough
vaccine that is said to be 95 percent effective in fighting against the known
meningitis viral strains. One of the
researchers, Dr. Jan Matthias Braun, explained: "The vaccine contains
antibodies that prevent the bug from causing the inflammation of the membrane
surrounding the brain." According
to one of the founders of the Meningitis Association of Scotland, Eileen McKeirnan, the new vaccine would protect against the A, B,
and C strains of meningitis. Meningitis
has killed three people already this year in Scotland, and it took the lives of
13 last year.
