Street Children Get a 'Shot' at Health

In Pune, India, members of the Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP), Pune, have started monitoring the health of the city's street children. The project is part of the child abuse, neglect, and child labor plan adopted by the organization at its national meeting earlier this year. The street children are given an identity card which they can use to obtain vaccinations and free medical treatment. According to the secretary of the IAP, Dilip Sarda, "The children are administered a single dose of a single vaccine to cover several ailments like DPT (diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus), MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), hepatitis B, and polio." Sarda added that Serum India is providing the vaccine doses free of charge.
