Research links contraceptive pill to breast cancer risk

New research has confirmed that using the pill can increase a woman's risk of developing breast cancer.

Earlier small studies have shown the chance of getting the disease rises by about 25 per cent in women who have used oral contraceptives compared to those who have not.

New material presented at a European Breast Cancer Conference in Barcelona confirms the results and also finds that for women aged over 45 who take the pill, the risk of breast cancer is doubled.

It was the largest study into the effects of the pill so far, with a research team from Norway following the medical records of over 100,000 women through the 1990s.
