"Pilot Project for Epidemic Control"
Times of India (www.timesofindia.com) (03/18/02); Gautam, Arshit
In India, the state of Lucknow has set up a two-year pilot project to establish a self-sufficient unit for epidemic control in every district. The project is the brainchild of the World Health Organization's department of communicable disease surveillance and response. Each district will have an Infectious Disease Hospital with a well-equipped laboratory capable of determining the nature of a disease. The data collected would be used to identify the most affected age group, which could then be targeted for vaccination or chemoprophylaxis. A rapid response team is also being set up in each district, consisting of a statistician, a laboratory technician, and three doctors.
