U.S. IMMUNIZATION NEWS
"New Vaccine Requirement Met With Resistance"
Associated Press (www.ap.org) (03/25/02)
Over half of the students registered to attend and live on the University of Connecticut campus in Storrs this coming fall have not yet gotten their mandatory meningitis immunization. In June 2000, a new state law went into effect requiring returning students to show proof of immunization by June 1 and new students by July 15. So far, however, the response has been lukewarm, with about 6,000 of the 10,000 students who plan to live on campus next year still either without the shot or proof of vaccination. The shot costs between $65 and $85 and is not generally covered by insurance companies.
